A Proudly South African Advent Calendar: A Celebration of Connection and Joy
Every holiday season brings an opportunity to pause and embrace moments of connection, reflection, and celebration. Two years ago, my heart led me to create a unique piece that embodies the spirit of South African Christmas – a fabric South African Advent Calendar. Inspired by my own family traditions and a desire to showcase the beauty of African wildlife during the festive season, this heirloom-quality calendar offers a way to make each December day feel magical, intentional, and full of wonder. The Inspiration Behind the Advent Calendar
The idea for this calendar was sparked during a Christmas spent with my husband’s family. His aunt had created beautiful advent calendars for the children, featuring European scenes like snow and Christmas trees. While lovely, it felt distant from our South African experience, where December means sunshine, wildlife, and the vibrant energy of summer.
That’s when the thought hit me: Why not create an advent calendar that reflects our own wildlife and holiday feeling? I envisioned African animals gathering around a Christmas tree, and that’s how the design began to take shape. I wanted this to be more than just an advent calendar – I wanted it to be a piece that families could enjoy and treasure for years to come.
Crafting Connection and Celebration
Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year. To me, it’s not just about the big celebrations but about the little moments that make the season special. The South African Advent Calendar was designed with this idea in mind – it’s an heirloom piece that helps families create memories and moments of connection. Whether you're placing chocolates in the pockets, building a LEGO or puzzle creation day by day, or sharing daily activities with my matching activity cards, this calendar becomes part of the story you tell each December.
One of my favorite additions this year is the inclusion of these activity cards, allowing families to slow down and savor quality time together. From baking cookies to reading the Nativity story, the advent calendar becomes a daily reminder of what matters most during the holiday season.
Bringing Africa into Christmas
When I began designing the calendar, I knew I wanted to feature South African wildlife. I included a craned crown, which resembles an angel, as well as the proud springbok, giraffe, vervet monkey, and elephant. These creatures gathered around the Christmas tree create a magical, whimsical scene that’s perfect for both children and adults.
The design process was quick when it came to the illustration itself. I could already picture the scene and just had to bring it to life. However, the technical side of designing the fabric was a little trickier – especially ensuring the pockets were the perfect size for filling and stitching. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how this design turned into something families can use and treasure each year.
A Functional and Beautiful Heirloom
Functionality and beauty were both priorities for this calendar. It’s hand-sewn by two seamstresses, adding a personal touch and ensuring that each one is made with love. The batting inside gives the calendar a plush, quilted feel, while the dowels provide stability, ensuring it hangs beautifully no matter what you place inside the pockets.
The colors are also gender-neutral and not overly bright, making the calendar suitable for any modern living space. It’s the perfect blend of sophistication and playfulness, something that children will love while fitting seamlessly into your home decor.
Creating New Traditions and Memories
This will be the first year my daughter, who’s nearly two, gets to experience the South African Advent Calendar with us. I can’t wait to create new traditions and memories with her as we count down to Christmas. Whether it's reading the Nativity story, doing daily activities, or simply enjoying the excitement of opening each pocket, this calendar offers endless opportunities to make the season meaningful and special.
